First United Reformed Church of Oak Lawn
Preparing for Corporate Worship - Sunday, November 09, 2025
Services at 9:30 AM and 5:00 PM
Dear Friends,
The next Lord's day is almost here. That means you and I are one week nearer to eternity with Him than when you read my previous "preparing" email. It is helpful and important to keep eternity "top of mind."
As we gather this Sunday we will spend the day in prayer and learning about prayer.

MORNING WORSHIP SERVICE
Lord's Day 45 of the Heidelberg Catechism begins the final section, dealing with the Lord's Prayer. We will be in Luke 11.1-10 in the morning, taking up the basics of prayer and as an introduction to the Lord's prayer which we will begin in December.
Scripture Reading: Luke 11.1-13
Confessional Reading: Heidelberg Catechism Lord’s Day 45
Text: Luke 11.1-10
Message: “This is Answered Prayer”
Theme: The Lord teaches us to be informed and bold children when we pray
1. Prayer is the teaching of the Lord to His church
2. Prayer is born of informed awareness
3. Prayer is fueled by persistent boldness
4. Such prayer from children will be answered by our Father

EVENING WORSHIP SERVICE
In the evening our attention will turn to Luke 11.11-13 (especially verse 13) where we learn what Jesus means when He says to Christians that He will give the Holy Spirit to those of us who ask Him. This should be a rich day to learn more about prayer!
-------------------------------------
Scripture Reading: Luke 11.1-13
Confessional Reading: Heidelberg Catechism Lord’s Day 45
Text: Luke 11. 1-4, 11-13
Sermon: “Ask Your Father for the Holy Spirit – We Need Him!”
Theme: The Lord teaches us to ask for the Holy Spirit in prayer
1. Prayer is the teaching of the Lord to His church
2. Prayer is like our children asking us for a needed blessing
3. Prayer is we children asking our Father for the Holy Spirit
--------------------------------
It is encouraging to notice what the Lord is doing in our midst these days. One way we notice that is by gathering together twice on Sunday. I pray there is nothing more important on your schedule Sunday morning and Sunday evening than the gathered, corporate praise of our God. We do what God's people have always done. Listen to this from 2 Chronicles 29.29, 20: "When the offerings were finished, the king and everyone present with him knelt down and worshipped. King Hezekiah and his officials ordered the Levites to praise the LORD with the words of David and of Asaph the seer. So they sang praises with gladness and bowed their heads and worshipped." And so will we.
Please pray that the Lord's day will be spiritually enriching to all of God's people.
“Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand
and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against His Anointed One. ‘Let us break their
chains,’ they say, ‘and throw off their fetter.’ The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the LORD
scoffs at them.” Psalm 2.1-4
